Strength training is designed to enhance your muscular strength and endurance, helps in burning excess body fat, and overall, provides physical, mental and emotional wellbeing benefits.  

There are many benefits to adding strength training to your exercise regime.  It’s a well-known fact that this type of training increases bone density, and greatly reduces the risk - especially for people that may be predisposed to developing – osteoporosis. This will aid and facilitate your balance and coordination – that means we are less likely to fall “lose our balance” and injure ourselves!

Working our muscles results in burning more calories and we all know what a negative impact carrying excess weight on our bodies can have.  Remember, the more you build up your muscle strength with exercises like push-ups, squats, lunges, pull-ups etc, the easier it gets and the longer we can work-out – now that’s a bonus!

Remember to give your muscles when doing this type of training “a rest” in between.  Upper one day, lower the next or a full body workout 2 to 3 times per week. This is a “no excuses” method of getting in some strength training for your body.  As you progress with strength training, you’ll develop more variety to stay motivated!

If you’re not really into exercising – or think laying on a sofa and using the remote control for the TV as a means of exercising the arms – then at lease start by walking.  At the very least, it will increase strength in your legs, and who knows, you might even want to get the rest of your body to join in and get moving.

Keep in mind that if you can’t get to the gym, haven’t got access to any of the usual fitness equipment, grab two can of baked beans or other items with equal weight to start, at the very least, some form of strength training.  You will, after doing some consistent training, start to feel better. What you want to do is build up a “I want to do more” attitude, then you’re on your way.
